The Long Wait is Over: Katki Mela to Begin on This Date in Lucknow
Lucknow: The long wait for Lucknowites, eagerly anticipating the beloved Katki Mela, also known as the “Bhudakki Mela,” is finally over. The much-anticipated annual event, a hallmark of the city’s cultural calendar, will officially open its doors on December 15. Awadh360 has learned from municipal authorities that the tender process for organising this year’s fair is nearing completion, with final bids under review and a decision expected shortly.
The Katki Mela, an age-old tradition held every year on Kartik Purnima (15th November), has been a significant cultural and economic hub for the people of Lucknow and nearby regions. Known for its vibrant stalls, food courts, folk performances, and carnival-like atmosphere, the fair draws thousands of visitors every day during its month-long run. However, this year’s event faced an unusual delay due to administrative hurdles and disputes, leaving many disappointed.
Now, with the announcement of the tender process, there’s renewed hope and excitement. LMC confirmed that two major contenders, Abid Electric Works and Khushi Traders, are in the race to manage the event. “The tender process was floated late on Friday, and we have scheduled its finalisation by Saturday. Once that’s done, preparations will commence immediately to ensure everything is ready for December 15,” said an official.
Why the Delay?
The delay in organising the Katki Mela this year stemmed from procedural formalities and repeated rejections of earlier bids. Officials revealed that none of the bids submitted during the initial rounds adhered to the terms and conditions outlined by the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC). Moreover, disputes regarding space allocation at Jhoolelal Ghat further complicated the process, extending the delay to almost a month.
“The earlier tenders didn’t meet our requirements, and there were also issues with approvals for the venue. But now that the procedural issues are resolved, we are confident the fair will be held without further interruptions,” said an LMC official.
Preparations and Expectations
Once the tender is finalized, the event organizer will have less than ten days to set up the infrastructure, including stalls, lighting, amusement rides, sanitation facilities, and security arrangements. Despite the tight timeline, LMC officials are optimistic that the fair will meet the standards that residents have come to expect.
In addition to traditional attractions, this year’s fair is expected to feature new highlights, including a special section for artisan handicrafts and an expanded food court showcasing Awadhi cuisine. Local businesses and vendors, who rely heavily on the Katki Mela for their annual income, are relieved that the event is finally moving forward.
“I’ve been participating in the fair for 15 years, and this delay had me worried about missing out on my seasonal income,” said Ram Naresh, a vendor who sells handcrafted jewelry. “The Katki Mela is not just a fair; it’s a lifeline for small traders like us.”
Cultural and Historical Significance
The Katki Mela, with its roots in Lucknow’s rich cultural heritage, dates back over a century. Initially a religious gathering on Kartik Purnima, it has evolved into a grand fair attracting visitors from across Uttar Pradesh and beyond. Locally referred to as the “Bhudakki Mela,” the event holds a special place in the hearts of Lucknowites, who view it as a celebration of community and tradition.
“I remember visiting the fair as a child with my parents, and now I take my kids every year,” said Poonam Sharma, a local resident. “It’s a beautiful mix of spirituality, culture, and fun, and I’m thrilled it’s finally happening this year.”
What’s Next?
With the tender decision expected by Saturday, the chosen organiser will have their hands full in preparing the venue at Jhoolelal Ghat. LMC officials have assured that additional resources will be deployed to fast-track preparations, ensuring the event opens on time.
This year, the fair is also expected to include tighter security measures, improved waste management systems, and dedicated parking facilities to handle the large crowds. “Our goal is to make the event more organised and enjoyable for visitors while maintaining the traditional charm that makes the Katki Mela unique,” said an LMC official.
